Guatemala Smile Mission

Guatemala Smile Mission

February 2015 Trip Synopsis

The second annual Guatemala Smile Mission outreach initiative was successfully completed from February 14th-21st, 2015. A team consisting of ten members, which included dental students, a dentist, dental assistants, and a hygienist, met in San Bernadino, Guatemala to provide dental care to citizens in need. The team was supported in Guatemala by several translators, a dental assistant from our affiliated organization [Partners in Development (PID)], and local citizens who helped with instrument sterilization, cooking and cleaning, and so forth. The team and its supporters quickly formed a companionship that led to a high volume of quality dental care throughout the week.

Hundreds of extractions, restorations, fluoride treatments, and sealants were provided to Guatemalans on a first-come-first-serve basis. Dozens of Guatemalans from the local villages and beyond were lined up at our clinic doorstep hours before our arrival each morning. Patients were triaged and teeth to be treated were prioritized based on pain. Most of the time extractions were necessary to alleviate the pain as their teeth were severely broken down by caries, and a lot of times only root tips remained. However, many teeth were saved by restorations, and caries control was ensured to prevent further tooth loss. We also made about a dozen dentures for esthetically compromised citizens, which replaced their maxillary incisors and gave them the confidence to succeed in society.

The students were able to learn and practice many dentistry skills under the supervision of the dentist in charge. The workweek was broken down into rotations in each major treatment area (extractions, restorations, and dentures) such that each student had a chance to hone their skills in each of these areas. The dentist supervised all of the procedures, and if any student felt uncomfortable proceeding with a treatment, the dentist was always available to take the reigns and finish the job, while still providing an educational experience. The wealth of experience that this outreach has provided the dental students has made us better clinicians, and we hope to convey our new knowledge to our classmates in future clinic periods.

The expedition was physically, mentally, and emotionally demanding, as our workdays ranged from 10-12 hours. However, we always had motivation and inspiration to push harder each and everyday from the gratitude that the Guatemalans displayed when we were able to alleviate their pain and give them a better smile. Despite working long hours, the group was able to find time to explore and appreciate the culture in Guatemala and the beauty of its land. The team returned to their homelands with an enhanced appreciation of cultural diversity.

In summary, this outreach initiative has once again demonstrated the success of the Guatemala Smile Mission, and how dedication from dental students and dental professionals can really change lives. This trip would not have been possible without our numerous donors and supporters (to whom we will thank appropriately).

We are already looking forward to and planning our next trip in 2016!

Well done to our DDS Class of 2016 on a night of well done table clinics.

Alternatively, students may conduct a research project and present their results and conclusions. This project is started with students in their 2nd year, present their table clinic in their 3rd year and write a final paper in their fourth year.

On June 21, 2014 the Federation of Canadian Dentistry Student Association met to have it's second Annual General Meeting in Ottawa, Ontario. Two students from each of the ten Canadian dental schools attended, including Heather Patry (right) and Bryce Tung (left) representing Dalhousie's Dentistry Student Society (DDSS). The goals of this meeting were to discuss how we could continue to unify a Canadian dentistry student body, how to develop and promote the FCDSA as well as individual student societies, and how we could advocate for the rights of dental students across Canada. There were a number of great presentations on leadership and strategy development, in which our students were able to learn a lot which will be able to apply to the DDSS.  We very much look forward to what these students learned and are able to bring to help promote our student society!

National Leadership Conference

Dalhousie Dentistry Student’s Society sends two representatives to the American Student Dental Association National (ASDA) Leadership Conference in Chicago, Illinois. Ben and Heather attended several keynote presentation and leadership seminars and plan to utilize what they learned to promote the growth and development of DDSS. ASDA’s 2013 National Leadership Conference welcomed more than 400 predoctoral students and 50 predentals. Save the date for next year’s event: Oct. 31-Nov. 2, 2014 at the Fairmont Hotel in Chicago, Ill.

Personal development (outside of dental school) is important.

Students receive in-depth training in general and specific areas of dentistry through dental school – including ethics, treatment options and patient care. But the “life skills” needed to be a successful business owner, team leader and people manager are sometimes left out of the mix. The National Leadership Conference bridges the gap between the classroom and the real world by providing leadership training to dental students across all years, and predentals. All members are invited. You do not need to have experience as a chapter or national leader to attend.

There are four educational “tracks,” each with a variety of sessions to choose from. Stick to one track or switch between all of them over the three days at NLC:

  • ASDA & Organized Dentistry
  • Career Planning & Business Leadership
  • Advocacy, Politics & Professional Issues
  • Chapter Leadership & Management
